What is a Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction surgery, also known as a reduction mammoplasty, is used to remove excess breast fat, skin, and glandular tissue to reduce the discomfort associated with overly large breasts and to achieve a breast size that is more proportional to the body dimensions. Inordinately large breasts may cause emotional distress and body image issues in some women, factors that may lead them to consider a breast reduction surgery. Large breasts also cause physical discomforts such as back pain, neck pain, chaffing under the breasts, stretched skin, painful indentation from overworked bra straps that strive to support heavy breasts, and other associated physical distress. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 96,000 women underwent breast reduction surgery in 2011, the majority with satisfactory outcomes. In some rare cases, men with gynecomastia, a condition that causes an abnormal enlargement of the male breasts, may also benefit from a breast reduction surgery. Excel Center performs breast reduction surgery on patients in Houston, TX, Sugar Land, TX, and nearby cities.

Due to the number of health problems associated with very large breasts, some health insurance companies will cover all or party of the cost of breast reduction surgery.  The staff at Excel Center Houston can work with your insurance company to obtain the maximum returns for your breast reduction.

Breast Reduction Procedure from Excel Center Houston

When you come to Excel Center for a consultation, your surgeon will examine your breasts by taking measurements, checking skin tone and other factors such as the placement of the nipples and areolas. Your surgeon will also examine your medical history to find out if you are a good fit for breast reduction surgery. During the surgery, the surgeon will make incisions through which he will remove excess breast tissue and will reposition the nipple and areola. In exceedingly large breasts that have caused the areola to stretch, the surgeon will also reduce the size of the areola. The breast reduction procedure usually lasts between two to five hours, depending on the size of the breasts, the amount of fat to be removed, and whether it is necessary to resize the areola. After the procedure, your breasts will be wrapped in surgical gauze, and you may be required to wear a surgical bra. The healing time differs according to individual healing rates. Usually, serious physical activities will be restricted until about a month after the breast reduction surgery.
